Acne Skin Care Leeds

Acne is a skin condition that can affect most people at some point in their life. We commonly associate acne with teenage skins as approximately 8 out of 10 people between the age of 11-25 tend to develop some degree of acne. Even though acne is less likely after the age of 25, adult acne is still present. Around 5% of women and 1% of men continuing or starting to show signs of acne. There are six different types of acne ranging from:

  • whiteheads
  • blackheads
  • papules
  • pustules
  • nodules
  • cysts.
What causes acne?

Small sebaceous glands lie just under the skins surface. These glands make the oil (sebum) that keeps the skin supple and smooth. Tiny holes (pores) on the skin allow the sebum to come on to the skin surface. Hairs also grow through these pores and acne occurs when the follicle becomes plugged with oil and dead skin cells. The over production of oil and dead skin cells provides an environment for bacteria to thrive and hence acne inflammation occurs.
The triggers which cause this excess oil production can vary from person to person; it can be hormonal, family history of acne, medication, poly-cystic ovary syndrome, stress to name a few.

Treatments

There are many different treatment options for acne and this can vary depending on what is believed to be the cause of acne and the severity. Below are a few of the most popular treatment options which can be considered when dealing/managing acne:

  1. Seek advise from your GP – who may recommend topical or oral antibiotics, topical or oral retinal, topical Benzoyl Peroxide cream or hormonal therapy such as the contraceptive pill
  2. Seek advise from your local skin clinic – who may recommend such treatments as peels/facials, laser treatment and LED light therapy. As well as offering topical skin care solutions to help reduce the oil production and retinal to help tackle the acne.
  3. Consider internal health – you may want to consider nutritional advice and look at the such dietary changes as sugar intake and introducing good supplementation.
